10 Horror Movies That Deserve A Sequel (But Will Never Get One)
9. The Final Girls
Serving as a love-letter to 1980s slashers, The Final Girls follows Max, a grieving young woman, and her friends as they're sucked into the campy horror flick, Camp Bloodbath. Although the group are desperate to leave the movie, Max is conflicted since the lead character in Camp Bloodbath is played by her deceased mother, Amanda.
The Final Girls is an underrated horror-comedy, masterfully parodying the genre's tropes while maintaining an emotional core. It makes fun of every slasher stereotype, including double-entendre dialogue, one-note characters, and how cool moments must be accompanied by slow-motion.
Most importantly, there's enough material to warrant another instalment. Now, there are many classic slashers that have been diluted since their later entries were just more of the same. However, this dilemma could work in The Final Girls 2's favour, since it can deconstruct cliches associated with horror sequels.
Co-writer M.A. Fortin stated that The Final Girls 2 had been discussed, which would reveal Max's father. This development could delve into Max's childhood, while serving as a perfect opportunity to spoof convoluted backstories and nonsensical retcons. Sadly, little has been heard of the project in a decade, so The Final Girls 2 feels like wishful thinking at this point.
