An exploitation, rape-revenge series is about as far from prestige horror as you can get, and by and large fans know what they’re in for going in with these kinds of flicks. And yet, even in this series, some things are beyond the pale.

The previous film in the series, Vengeance Is Mine, gave us a heroine who has channelled her trauma from being targeted and assaulted, and turned it against those who prey on other women, hunting down rapists and making sure they can’t do it again - not a lot of growth, but growth nonetheless. So, when approaching I Spit On Your Grave: Déjà Vu, which brings back Camille Keaton as Jennifer Hills for a direct sequel to Meir Zarchi's deeply controversial 1978 original, we rightly expected more of the same.

But, despite Jennifer’s struggle throughout the first film, with her survival at the end after overcoming her attackers (perhaps its only somewhat redeeming feature), Deja Vu has both Jennifer and her daughter Christy (Jamie Bernadette) kidnapped by the families of Jennifer's original rapists early doors. It’s shocking, it’s disappointing and it pisses us off for all the wrong reasons.

And the rest of the film follows suit, making a concerted effort to be the worst it can be. Jennifer is murdered, and Christy gets raped, starting the whole cycle over again…
