10 Horror Movies That Really Needed A Better Villain

8. Annabelle

Alien Resurrection
Warner Bros.

Let's be honest - most people went to see Conjuring spin-off Annabelle because they thought, or at least hoped, that it'd be about an ambulatory killer doll in the vein of the Child's Play movies.

But instead, the $6.5 million horror went the lower-cost route of simply having the doll listlessly act as a vessel for a vengeful spirit, meaning we never actually see it move or basically do anything fun at all.

Annabelle certainly looks suitably creepy, so there's definitely potential there, but the series' refusal to just give into the schlock and have Annabelle run around terrorising people - whether through CGI or old-school puppetry - is one of cinema's great recent missed opportunities.

If the enduring success of the Child's Play series has proven anything, it's that people love a mobile killer doll.

The Conjuring franchise's "restrained" (or cheap) decision to never show Annabelle moving makes it tough to muster much enthusiasm about her as an iconic horror villain, despite the series' undeniable success.
