10 Horror Movies That Teased A Sequel Which Never Happened
6. Godzilla
Though not as scary as some of the others on this list, we're still talking about a kaiju in a monster movie, so still within the realms of horror, and to say that 1998's Godzilla underwhelmed would be a wild understatement.
Outdone by both Legendary's Godzilla within the MonsterVerse and the peerless Godzilla Minus One, the Matthew Broderick-led flick left a lot to be desired, and even in the face of a clear and obvious sequel tease, and a respectable haul of $379 million at the box office, there was never any real call for more.
While Minus One left a delicious tease that the King of the Monsters survived, something that will no doubt be followed up in 2026's Minus Zero, things went in a similar but slightly different direction in 1998. Godzilla may have been defeated, but it left an egg ready to hatch behind.
Son of Godzilla has been featured on the big screen in the past, and though there was never a sequel to the 1998 outing to explore the character, there was instead Godzilla: The Animated Series, in which the hatchling imprints on Nick Tatopoulos (Broderick's character from the film), and essentially becomes a weapon. It's not a sequel, but at there's some closure on it, right?
