10 Horror Movies That Turned Out Nothing Like You Were Expecting
4. Beau Is Afraid
Ari Aster is a name that means a lot to horror fans, as he's the maniacal mastermind behind Hereditary and Midsommar. His grounded style that explores interpersonal relationships with hints of comedy and visceral violence has garnered plenty of acclaim. That's what makes this bonkers 2023 flick of his all the more unexpected.
Beau is Afraid is an odyssey of surrealism following the titular character (played by Joaquin Phoenix) as he embarks on an absurd journey after the death of his mother.
Beau's adventure is brimming with odd encounters and sequences, including - but not limited to - death by orgasm, chandelier decapitations, a travelling theatre troupe, and even a giant penis monster. Yes, you read that right.
Naturally, with all the Kafkaesque madness in this film, it becomes hard to know what the hell is going on. It's the kind of flick that doesn't expect you to make sense of it right away, and you'd never be able to anyway.
Plenty of people expected Ari Aster's next movie to be in the same line as his last two films, but Beau is Afraid is so far past that line it's on the other edge of the universe.
