10 Horror Movies That Will Make You Terrified Of Children
5. Village Of The Damned (1960)
Also based on a novel (which might as well be a
running theme at this point), Village of the Damned is a sci-fi horror directed
by Wolf Rilla, and starring George Sanders. In the film, a mysterious, unexplained
event causes the simultaneous birth of several dozen children, all of which
exhibit strange, otherworldly characteristics. In terms of appearance, they
seem remarkably indistinct from one another, and they always seem to travel
together in groups, speaking almost in unison.
Over the years, a number of strange, unsolved murders have permeated the village, and many of the townsfolk have grown suspicious of the children. In one scene, a villager is compelled to crash his own car, right before his brother is coerced into committing suicide. Later, more inexplicable occurrences result in further death and destruction, finally confirming everyone’s suspicions regarding the children. In short, they’re evil, utterly.
Verdict: An absolute classic, Village of the Damned is bursting with iconic imagery, as well as a handful of genuinely frightening sequences. The highlight: the children themselves, who act in the most uncanny, disturbing manner imaginable. In a sense, they’re like homicidal Vulcans, incapable of empathy, and completely indifferent to the longevity of human life.
