10 Horror Movies To Watch If You Love The Outdoors

5. Speak No Evil

It's incredibly common for English-language remakes to fall flat at the first hurdle. However, James Watkins' interpretation of the original Danish-Dutch-English film breaks the norm.

It delivers a devilishly wicked reimaging that honours its predecessor whilst being an entirely separate entity at points, especially during the film's finale. Speak No Evil features a fantastic cast, including Mackenzie Davies, Scoot McNairy, Aisling Franciosi, and youngsters Alix West Lefler and Dan Hough. That said, one man steals the show (as he often does): James McAvoy.

McAvoy has enjoyed a fine career to date, and although his versatility may be his biggest strength, he has a real knack for nailing horror. You can tell that he had a blast playing the psychotic Paddy. He's obnoxious and equally narcissistic, and McAvoy brings the perfect concoction of charm and chills needed to the role. Make no mistake, this sometimes makes for a very unsettling and uncomfortable watch.

Speak No Evil doesn't shy away from jump scares, but it mainly pours all of its eggs into its suspense basket, and apart from McAvoy's performance, this is where the film shines.

Although the suspense is ideally paid off by an incredibly satisfying conclusion that will have you cheering and clapping, the film's finale is reasonably watered down from its predecessors. It's funny, grisly, and downright disturbing at points, but it's a horror well worth watching. After all, there are plenty of worse places to go for a little couples therapy than the English countryside!
