10 Horror Movies You Didn't Know Nearly Happened

7. World War Z Sequels

Dumb and Dumber To
Paramount Pictures

Released in 2013, World War Z is by no means an action nor a horror genre classic but still served as an entertaining tentpole despite its lacklustre conclusion. Despite its somewhat generic nature, it still grossed close to $600 million, and this impressive box office haul meant that a sequel was all but guaranteed.

Well before its release, in January 2012, director Marc Forster and Paramount Picture envisioned the zombie blockbuster as the beginning of an epic trilogy inspired by the likes of the Bourne films and The Walking Dead. Its production issues slowed down the trilogy's development but the aforementioned box office haul breathed new life into planning out future instalments.

During this phase, Forster was replaced by J.A. Bayona, and Steven Knight was brought in to pen the movies before David Fincher eventually joining the venture in June 2017. However, his commitment to Mindhunters later that year and the fear of missing out on the Chinese box office saw the films' cancellation in early 2019.
