10 Horror Movies You Really Wanted To Like (But Actually Couldn’t)
9. Old
Based on M. Night Shyamalan's inconsistent output, half of this list could've consisted of his work. But since the Oscar-nominated director has a few gems under his belt, including The Sixth Sense, Unbreakable, and Split, it's fair to give his projects the benefit of a doubt.
Which brings us to Old, which was based on the graphic novel, Sandcastle. The body-horror follows a group of people who find themselves trapped on a beach that causes them to rapidly age.
Despite the compelling premise, Old falls victim to the usual Shyamalan trappings, including stilted performances, pacing issues, illogical character choices, and bewildering dialogue (especially when a kid starts speaking about mortgages).
But what makes Old so disappointing is that it has glimpses of greatness. It explores fascinating ideas, like how the time-dilation affects child growth, pregnancy, cancer, infections, physical ailments, and mental illnesses. It also contains some of the most unsettling imagery in any Shyamalan film. (Watching Chrystal's bones breaking and repairing too quickly is a visual nobody is sure to forget anytime soon.)
If Shyamalan tightened up the script and stopped relying on his overplayed bag of tricks, Old could've been so much better.
