10 Horror Movies You Really Wanted To Like (But Actually Couldn’t)
8. Bird Box: Barcelona
Bird Box is set in a post-apocalyptic world where people are compelled to take their lives if they make eye-contact with interdimensional monsters.
Despite receiving mixed reviews, the adaption of Josh Malerman's novel was a global phenomenon, becoming the most watched Netflix feature within a month.
However, the sci-fi drama left many questions unanswered, mainly involving the creatures' origins. So, when a spin-off called Bird Box Barcelona was announced six years later, it was hoped this follow-up would expand on the lore.
But Barcelona offers nothing new. Instead, it follows a similar structure as the previous entry, but with less emotional depth or suspense. Even though the jumps between timelines and perspectives should give the audience a better understand of what's going on, the overarching narrative is needlessly confusing. Rather than having a relatable ensemble, characters are introduced and killed off soon after, making it hard to invest in anyone emotionally.
To Barcelona's credit, it puts more focus on the people unaffected by the entities, which was only touched upon in Bird Box. However, nothing new is learned about the so-called Seers, so this subplot seems pointless.
Although Barcelona could've spawned a franchise, it didn't do anything the original hadn't already covered.
