10 Horror Villains Who Were Just Misunderstood

3. Frankenstein’s Monster – Frankenstein

American Psycho
Universal Pictures

The OG of sympathetic horror villains, Frankenstein’s Monster is probably the most tragic character on this list. Considering the circumstances of his unnatural creation, the poor dude had the odds stacked against him from the start.

Stitched together from various rotting body parts by a madman with a God complex, Frankenstein’s Monster was born unto this world only for the man who created him to pretty much immediately shun him, lock him up and try to kill him.

On top of that, Dr Frankenstein – who for all intents and purposes is his father – doesn’t even bother to name him. He’s just referred to as ‘it’ or ‘a monster’ or ‘the creature’ throughout the film. Talk about a self-fulfilling prophecy.

Yes, he may have killed a few people along the way but that was after mankind had treated him pretty harshly through no fault of his own. Shame on you, humanity.
