10 Iconic Batman Comics That Should Be Movies (But Won't Ever Be)
4. Batman: A Death In The Family
After a second version of Robin began to irritate fans and put them off buying Batman comics altogether, DC found themselves at a crossroads of sorts. The decision was this. Either keep Jason Todd around and work with what they had or kill him off 'forever', paving the way for a third Boy Wonder. In the end, DC chose to let the fans decide, setting up an unprecedented public vote which quickly resulted in the death of Jason Todd, decades before X-Factor was even a thing. The fans were clearly out for blood on this one and DC let them have it, using the Joker to bludgeon Todd with a crowbar before finishing him off in an explosion. No way he's getting out of that one... said no superhero fan ever. As we all know, comic book deaths are as temporary as ..., so of course Todd returned years later, seeking revenge. Even with this knowledge though, the visceral impact of the original story line still hits the reader hard twenty years on, creating one of the most powerful Batman stories ever told. The first trailer for Batman V Superman: Dawn Of Justice indicates that aspects of Death In The Family could actually be making their way to the big screen after all, most explicitly in the shot of an old Robin costume covered with the Joker's taunts. However, even if elements of Jason Todd's death are used in the form of flashbacks, everything else we've seen so far suggests that the original story as a whole is nowhere to be seen, making a straight adaptation of this iconic tale extremely unlikely either now or in the distant future.
