10 Important Milestones The Marvel Cinematic Universe Must Pass

5. Having A Female-Led Movie (At The Very Least)

If the rumours and studio 'leaks' from Warner Bros. are to be believed, we could well be seeing a Wonder Woman solo movie with the next four years. This would be an ignominious blow to Marvel, who have so far been lightyears ahead of DC in terms of building on their film empire and pushing the boundaries of their universe. To be beaten to the punch in producing a non-male superhero vehicle by such a slow-moving behemoth would be something of a huge embarrassment, especially as there are so few female heroes in Marvel's films to date already (Black Widow, Maria Hill, Gamora in GotG; Pepper Potts and Jane Foster are feisty, but they're more often love objects than daring do-gooders). So what could Marvel do? Well, they could start with any number of projects they've been dancing around for the past couple of years. There's the Katee Sackhoff Captain Marvel movie everyone wants but nobody in the right positions to make it happen seems to be talking about; the Runaways film that has been in development hell (yes, it's a team book, but one with a very fair gender split); or, of course, the Black Widow flick that everyone's frankly astonished hasn't been announced yet. In some ways, it's understandable that Marvel are hesitant to try their hand at something unfamiliar like this; after all, the last high-profile female superhero to get her own movie was Catwoman, and the less said about that the better. On the other hand, there should be no reason at all that a film with a woman in the lead role is unfamiliar territory to a movie studio, so Marvel should maybe stop pussyfooting around and get the hell on with it.
