10 Incredible Sci-Fi Movie Universes We Need More Of
4. District 9
Neill Blomkamp blew audiences away with his surrealist sci-fi, as a ship full of refugee aliens are dumped in the heart of contemporary Johannesburg. Blomkamp’s vision the alien ghetto offered a truly disturbing commentary on poverty, the refugee crisis and apartheid in a setting not commonly covered in mainstream cinema, while still delivering a film that was whole-heatedly fun to watch.
The film did set itself up for a sequel, but it is sadly a sequel we will likely never get. However, with District 9 being one of the more iconic sci-fi films to come out of the last twenty years, its fair to say that almost anyone would like to see more of this universe.
Has there been further dismay since Wikis van de Merwe and his alien bud Christopher ripped through the streets of Johannesburg, leaving behind them the splattered remains of MNU soldiers? How have the “prawns” reacted now that their one hope of escape has floated off to space? Will Christopher return with a rescue party? Is cat food still the in thing? All of this and more could be answered in a return to this sci-fi take on modern South Africa.
