4. Doris Wishman
After being widowed at a young age, Doris Wishman got into the film industry and became a director of exploitation films. Her early career began with nudist films in the early 1960s. The most prominent of these was Nude on the Moon which featured a laughable storyline (a man inherits money and makes a rocket to go to the moon which is populated with telepathic women walking around with their breasts on show), poor dubbing of voices, lamentable acting and special effects that wouldn't hoodwink my dog. Wishman's films - whatever the subject and however poorly made, retain a charm built on goofy innocence. In two terrible, terrible movies, Wishman utilised the talents of 'Chesty Morgan' an average looking woman of Polish descent who couldn't act for toffee but possessed gigantic natural knockers - bigger than any actress in a Russ Meyer movie ever flaunted. The ensuing films - Deadly Weapons and Double Agent 73 were so jaw droppingly bad, they reached sublime heights of cinematic ineptitude. Miss Morgan's breasts are so vast, they inspire terror rather than arousal. Let Me Die a Woman in 1978, is Wishman's next notable exploitation feature which explored the world of sex changes in an oh so restrained manner. The concept of transexualism is handled so badly the film is stratospheric in its ineptitude - replete with graphic surgery of penis removal, interviews with trans-gendered people, a 'credible' doctor doing the narration (reminded me of Dr Francis B Gross in Faces of Death), and doctors probing a newly formed vagina. It was a tasteless affair and thus unintentionally hilarious - like so much of Wishman's work. It didn't surprise me to learn that Wishman had tried her hand at hard core porn film making. I have not seen her porn film efforts but I can't imagine they would be very erotic given Wishman's ineptitude. Nevertheless, she is a director who inspires affection amongst cult movie fiends because of her.naïve charm. Or maybe she was a cynical ham fisted cow. I will leave the verdict up to you.
