Carolco may have already been doomed before Cutthroat Island walked the plank at the box office, but the circumstances surrounding the shoot nonetheless accelerated their demise, and left many wondering why they plumped to make this movie over Total Recall duo Arnold Schwarzenegger and Paul Verhoeven's epic period piece Crusade.

Surely the alarm bells were ringing after nearly every big-name actor in Hollywood turned down the starring role, with several naming director Renny Harlin's insistence that his wife play the female lead as a deciding factor, but as Cutthroat Island was hit by setback after setback the budget spiraled up to $98m, which is the equivalent to almost $165m when adjusted for inflation.

Sets were torn down and rebuilt, the script was rewritten on an almost daily basis, crates upon crates of vegetable juice were shipped directly to the set for some reason, dozens of crew members were fired or quit, and all anyone had to show at the end of it was the single biggest box office bomb in history that could only muster an embarrassing box office tally of $10m.

I don't do social media, so like or follow me in person but please maintain a safe distance or the authorities will be notified. Don't snap me though, I'll probably break. I was once labelled a misogynist on this very site in a twenty paragraph-long rant for daring to speak ill of the Twilight franchise. I stand by what I said, it's crap.
