10 Infuriating Movie Cliffhangers That Nobody Bothered To Wrap Up
5. Where Did Marky Mark End Up? - Planet Of The Apes (2001)
The Cliffhanger: For the love of all that is holy, we come to one cliffhanger that just completely, unambiguously blows chunks and completely derails a movie that wasn't that great to begin with. Tim Burton's take on Planet of the Apes ends with Captain Leo Davidson (Mark Wahlberg) traveling back through time with the hope of ending up in his own era once again. However, when he arrives, Washington D.C.'s Lincoln Memorial resembles General Thade (Tim Roth) instead of Lincoln, and everyone in his immediate vicinity, such as rescue workers and the authorities, are freaking apes. Just...what!? What Probably Happened: Well, if we assume that Burton didn't actually lose his mind, the most likely explanation for this mind-bogglingly bad ending is that he simply felt too intimidated by audience expectation to simply repeat the ending of the original Charlton Heston-starring movie. The primary theory about the end of the movie is that Davidson accidentally travels to a parallel universe where apes walk the Earth rather than humans, though really, we're just firing in the dark considering the staggering lack of context this scene is given.
