10 Insane Movie Sequels That We Really Wish Had Happened
2. Ghostbusters III: Hellbent
Long before Ghostbusters was rebooted as that film with Kristen Wiig and Melissa McCarthy that you're really worried about, there were genuine plans to make a third film with the original cast and everything, Dan Aykroyd wrote the script in the 1990s, and for a while it seemed like Ghostbusters might wind up as a trilogy.
The reason it didn't? The idea that Aykroyd proposed was balls to the wall crazy - the sort of thing only a demented madman might conjure up after putting all of his money into a crystal head vodka company (oh, wait).
Aykroyd's script, titled Ghostbusters III: Hellbent, would have reportedly featured a barmy plot about "Manhellton," an alternate Hell-like reality to Manhattan; a sort of opposite-world that would have seen the Ghostbusters experiencing a nightmarish version of their home city.
This would have also been an extended scene where the gang ended up meeting the Devil, by the way - a step some fans might have deemed to be way too far for a comical series about nerds zapping ghosts.
Despite all the negative reviews that met the leaked script and the fact that none of the original cast wanted to get on board, had this actually been made it could have ended up being something special in that sort of "what the hell is this?" kind of way. Or, at least, more interesting than the lackluster Ghostbusters II.
All I'm saying is, I'd prefer this to have happened than to not have happened; it's not like there was a perfect legacy to protect. Hey, had they rendered this as more of a horror film, it might have resulted in one of the boldest - and most insane - sequels ever put to film.
