10 Insane Movie Sequels That We Really Wish Had Happened

1. Gladiator 2

Gladiator 2 might just well be the craziest, most bizarre and outlandish sequel idea ever conjured up by Hollywood. The fact that it has nothing in common with the original movie, save for its main character, makes it one of the most interesting follow-up proposals in cinema history.

Imagine, if you will, a sequel that follows the deceased hero Maximus Decimus Meridius into the afterlife, and you've got the bare bones of Gladiator 2. The plot kicks off when Maximus decides to wage war on the actual Gods, which inspires them to let him return to Earth as an immortal so he can experience a bunch of famous events across the span of history - including the Vietnam war - before landing a job working at the Pentagon. None of this is made up. All of it is in the actual script.

How did this film even get as far as it did? How did it get to the point where Ridley Scott and Russell Crowe saw the plot and agreed that it was a good idea? And yet I've saved the most unbelievable thing about this film until last: it was written by - wait for it - rock star Nick Cave. Like, Nick Cave was presented with the idea of Gladiator 2, and he said: "Okay, sure. I can write that." And then he did. He sat down and wrote it. He wrote this.

But you know what? I'm not convinced that the first Gladiator movie is anything other than an entertaining blockbuster, and I would have been totally up for a film that saw Russell Crowe Forest Gumping his way through time and doing all that crazy sh*t that Nick Cave's clearly demented brain conjured up.

This should have been made as a testament to the very idea of the sequel movie - a cash-in so far removed from its source material that you have no choice but to look upon it in a state of total awe.
