10 Insane Movies Way Deeper Than They Look
1. The Man Who Killed Hitler & Then The Bigfoot
The hilariously-titled The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot sounds like a bottom-shelf, low-budget B-movie in its bones, and the film does indeed revolve around a man, Calvin Barr (Sam Elliott), who killed Hitler in his youth and is now tasked with hunting down Bigfoot.
But this is a far more thoughtful, even emotional piece of work than anyone would ever glean from its willfully absurd title.
Somewhat reminiscent of Clint Eastwood's Unforgiven, this is a slow, mournful meditation on the origins and impact of violence on those who commit it, as Barr reckons with the fact that he's now an old man whose past is littered with regret.
It's surprisingly heavy stuff for the movie its moniker suggests, and yet Elliott's rich performance combines with sharp filmmaking from Robert D. Krzykowski to ensure it manages to be a well-drawn character piece while also delivering on the unhinged expectations of its title.
