One of the most significant events in the X-Men universe was the Dark Phoenix Saga. This event saw Jean Grey taken over by the cosmic entity known as the Phoenix Force, and she was corrupted in numerous ways, which made her responsible for killing an entire planet of sentient beings.

Jean wasn't just a danger to far-off alien worlds; she was a significant threat to her teammates as well. With her natural abilities turned up to eleven by the Phoenix Force, she was unstoppable, and her actions took her from being a superhero to being a villain.

Cyclops and the rest of the team did everything they could to try and save Jean from the Phoenix Force, and from herself, but everything they attempted resulted in failure. When Shi'ar Empress Lilandra implemented Plan Omega, which would destroy the entire solar system in the hope of destroying the Dark Phoenix, the X-Men had to take the gloves off.

Xavier ordered them to subdue Jean at all costs, and for a moment, Jean managed to regain control. While she had only a moment before losing to the Dark Phoenix once more, she said a tearful goodbye to Cyclops and used an ancient Kree weapon to disintegrate herself.

Her action depowered the Phoenix Force and effectively eliminated the Dark Phoenix, but it would eventually return.
