10 Insane Ways Iconic Movie Special Effects Were Achieved

3. The Water Droplets Are Condoms, Too (The Incredible Shrinking Man)

shrink1 Well, at least these special effects guys are always prepared, right? Here's another case of a movie crew who decided that the world's favourite (or least favourite, I guess) latex device would improve their flick tenfold. If you've ever seen The Incredible Shrinking Man, you'll know that it's about a man who is shrunk down to less than two inches in size. To be fair, if you haven't seen the movie, the title should be a dead giveaway, really. Most of the movie consists of our Incredible Shrinking Man going up against everyday things that we, as normal-sized persons, take for granted. Like, for example, water droplets, which - as you'd imagine - might not prove themselves to be quite so fun if you happen to be incredibly tiny. To achieve an effect that looked right, director Jack Arnold found that dropping water-filled condoms off the edge of a conveyer belt (?) gave him exactly what he was looking for. I don't know how or why he discovered this, and I think it's best kept that way.
