10 Insanely Weird Secrets Hidden In Movie Scenes

8. The Dead Crew Members' Faces Briefly Flash On Screen - Sunshine

Danny Boyle's cult classic sci-fi Sunshine is a pretty great movie, until it devolves into a generic slasher film in the final act, at least.

But Boyle does a fantastic job subtly building an ominous atmosphere, at one point employing extremely subtle use of blink-and-you'll-miss-it subliminal imagery to keep the viewer on their toes.

At roughly 50 minutes into the film, as the heroes board the derelict vessel Icarus I - the previous ship sent on the same mission to "reboot" the sun - we see several momentary flashes of human faces for minuscule fractions of a second. If you blink at the wrong moment or look away for even a beat, you'll easily miss them.

As it turns out, these are in fact the faces of the Icarus I crew members, who as we learn a short time later either died a violent death or, in the case of the malevolent Captain Pinbacker (Mark Strong, pictured below), was turned insane during the course of his mission.

At an unconscious level, it's deeply unsettling, especially as at a split-second glance it's impossible to tell whether the faces are indeed smiling or not.

In terms of keeping the audience uneasy as the protagonists search the ship, it's a directorial masterstroke - if a bloody odd one.
