10 Inspiring Documentaries That Could Change Your Life
2. Jiro Dreams Of Sushi
Jiro Dreams of Sushi documents the story of Jiro Ono, as well as the day-to-day management of his Michelin three-star sushi restaurant, Sukiyabashi Jiro. Released in 2012 to critical celebration, the documentary chronicles the life of its titular character – from his childhood through to his professional life – exploring the emotional consequences of his unending journey to perfect the artistry behind the preparation of raw fish.
Jiro’s ambitions – as well as his drive for success despite tremendous disadvantage – is compelling stuff, not to mention the level of craftsmanship going into the preparation of his sushi, which is downright mesmerising at times.
That said, there are more unsettling aspects, the central character portrayed as obsessive and overly patriarchal, imposing his own ambitions upon his children, Takashi and Yoshikazu, each of whom is portrayed with a degree of anxiousness about their father’s stringent practices and dogmatic perspectives.
