8. Amleth Mutilates His Enemies - The Northman
Robert Eggers' The Northman is such an electrifyingly brutal experience from top to bottom that it's tough to pick just a single moment that made audiences collectively turn away in disgust.
But the winner must surely be Amleth's (Alexander Skarsgård) brutally artistic display after slaughtering two of Fjölniir's (Claes Bang) men.
The next morning, some of Fjölniir's still-living soldiers make a grim discovery: the two corpses have been dismembered and nailed to the side of a hut, while arranged to resemble a horse.
On one hand it was a sick joke on Amleth's part, but also a potent act of psychological warfare, warning Fjölniir that he wouldn't be able to escape the tide of vengeance coming his way for killing Amleth's father, Aurvandill (Ethan Hawke).
While we only catch a brief glimpse of the desecrated corpses, the gory detail is enough to turn the stomachs of even the hardiest horror fan.
