7. The Exploding Spleen - Ambulance
Michael Bay's Ambulance is a wildly over-the-top, hyper-kinetic thrill-ride from start to finish, though it also takes a brief and unexpected detour into gross-out territory in the middle of the movie.
When bank robber brothers Danny (Jake Gyllenhaal) and Will (Yahya Abdul-Mateen II) hastily hijack an ambulance in order to escape, they're left saddled with unwanted company: an EMT in the back, Cam (Eiza González), who is trying to save the life of a cop, Zach (Jackson White), who was gravely wounded during the heist.
Cam reluctantly decides to perform surgery on Zach... in a moving ambulance that's being chased and shot at by the cops. Yup.
Due to her inexperience as a surgeon, though, she calls up her doctor ex, who hilariously connects her via Facetime with other trauma surgeons who talk her through the surgery.
It's an absolute laugh riot of a sequence in which Cam tries to follow the doctors' orders amid the chaos transpiring, only for the iPad battery to die, leaving her to complete the task herself.
And then comes the big shocking moment: Zach's spleen suddenly ruptures, shooting blood all over the place in the vein of a damn body horror movie. It's totally unexpected, and though Cam thankfully manages to save Zach's life regardless, it certainly looks pretty dicey for a moment.
In a movie filled with so much breakneck action, a surprise squib outta nowhere is what gave so many of us the heebie jeebies.
