10 Intriguing Movie Roles Matt Smith Should Play

Doctor Who Matt Smith

Before he won the role of the Doctor, Matt Smith auditioned for Sherlock but was deemed too left field for the series. However, with his sharp wits and irrepressible nature, a detective saga is a good movie route for him to take. A strong choice for a cinematic snooper may be Erast Fandorin, the main player in Boris Akunin's novel range that has been published since the 90s.

Set in the 19th century, it focuses on Fandorin, a Russian who investigates crimes amongst the upper echelons of society, as well as getting mixed up in espionage and war. Despite lacking confidence, displaying a stammer, he is a fiendish master of disguise and is blessed with a peculiar family tendency toward perpetual good luck.

Smith is renowned for his scatological approach to a role, impressing his fellow actors with the lengths he'll go to in order to get a performance right. Jenna Coleman spoke of his use of various accents when working on her audition. This meticulous approach would lend itself to Fandorin. Two movies have been made of his adventures in Russia and director Paul Verhoeven wants to make a version for the English-speaking market. If he's looking for a lead to crack the case, Smith could be exactly what he's after.
