Capturing the essence of a man who transcended a string of hit records and became an unmistakeable part of 20th century popular culture isn't easy. Many have tried, from Kurt Russell right through to Bruce Campbell. To inhabit a role such as Elvis Presley, you don't just need a physical likeness. You need that elusive quality that makes you stand out from other humans. And Matt Smith certainly has a way about him that you can't quite put your finger on.

A key part of his portrayal of the Doctor was his physicality, with the Eleventh possessing a family-sized pack of swagger wherever he went. Ungainly but capable of an otherworldly grace, he evolved into a combination of funky uncle and rock star.

Facially, it could be argued, he doesn't match Presley's angelic good looks. But his loyal army of swooning fans boast the fervour of a million comeback specials, and this fact alone is enough to propel Smith into the category of classic big screen Elvises. He'd be more akin to Nicolas Cage in Wild At Heart, a cool but crazy character with a healthy dash of the King of Rock 'n Roll.
