10 Key Changes We Wish Recent Movies Had Made
8. Change The Ending - Yesterday
Yesterday is a weird film. Not just because of who made it and when, but because it has some very weird stipulations to its parallel universe that may or may not be an alternate universe at all. Only it must be, but then how can it be? Confused, that seems to be the intention.
Anyway, the biggest issue for Yesterday is the ending, which should have been changed to the better by being a little more conventional. In films like this, where the hero wakes up in an alternate world and learns a lesson, they're usually invited to return to their own reality and live out those lessons. In Yesterday, Jack reveals his Beatles-theft after meeting John Lennon, who gave up his own dreams for love and a boring life and tells him to do the same to find true happiness.
At that point, Jack should go back to the world where the Beatles existed, prompted by Lennon - who should have been the Christmas Carol, Guardian Angel magical figure - because that's a happy ending on two levels. Not only does he get to be happy, but we get a world where the Beatles, Coca Cola and Harry Potter all exist. Sure, John Lennon doesn't survive, but that's what makes Jack's ending all the more impactful and less... nonsensical.
