10 Killer Horror Movies To Watch This Friday The 13th

Rob Zombie 31

Rob Zombie turned his back on the major studios to make 31, but even though he’s working with a crowdfunded budget, that doesn’t mean he’s decided to go the found footage route.

If anything, 31 is grimmer than House Of 1000 Corpses and even tells a similar story: one Halloween night in the late 1970s, a group of not particularly sympathetic characters are kidnapped and forced to participate in 31, where the name of the game is to stay alive for 12 hours. Think The Running Man with a retro look, multiple deaths by chainsaw (including a great decapitation sequence) and a Nazi midget, and you’re in the right ballpark.

Best of all is Richard Brake as Doom-Head, who has a shot at being the coldest, most twisted redneck in any Zombie movie to date (no mean feat). Given to grinning like a shark when he’s not carving up his victims, he also gets all of the film’s best lines. “You may think you see a grease-painted performer sitting before you,” he says in an opening monologue. “But trust me – I am not here to brighten your dismal day. I am here to end your miserable life.”
