10 Major 2014 Films That Will Probably Kill Their Franchise

10. 22 Jump Street

Phil Lord and Chris Miller are well on the way to becoming two of the highest grossing filmmakers of 2014. They€™ve already struck blocks of gold with The LEGO Movie and will be putting another (that€™s a quick turnaround) film into cinemas in a couple of months in the form of 22 Jump Street. The original, a reboot of the Johnny Depp eighties TV show was better than it had any right to be. Channing Tatum showed he could pick good projects and Jonah showed he could do more than just be €˜the fat one€™. The idea (cops go undercover in a high school and find things are very different) is quite funny, but easily could have fallen apart in the wrong hands. Which was also the case with Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, which Lord and Miller also helmed. Yeah, these guys are good. But things are less bankable with 22 Jump Street. From the trailer and production interviews it looks like the duo are going for some subtle commentary on the franchise machine, purposely making their film bigger and brasher (with a constant wink to the audience). The danger here is that it ends up being too literal and is just big and brash (sans wink). And as Jump Street isn€™t so big it can€™t fail, that could spell the end.
