Film: Inhumans (July 12, 2019)

With Fox not letting go of the X-Men anytime soon, Marvel has made an effort to re-position the Inhumans in their role of fantastical team of outsiders who deal with genetic oppression. As a result, Paul Jenkins and Jae Lee’s maxi-series, known for it’s successful creation of an entirely alien culture and weirdly enticing art, perfectly fills that void.

Put simply, Inhumans is Game of Thrones in space, told from the view of the ruling family, headlined by Black Bolt, the silent leader with a voice of steel, and his wife, the fierce queen Medusa. We learn all about the Inhuman culture, where youths are subjected to the Terrigen Mists upon reaching a certain age, whereupon they receive a genetic change, which can offer both powers or deforming mutations. All the while, they face threats both inside and out, from invaders and duplicitous siblings.

It’s at once family drama, coming-of-age story and war epic, with strong character work and world-building that would be impossible to ignore for the film. It's a truly unique property, and despite it not being well-known, a story like this one makes it obvious how the film could succeed.
