One of the most controversial MCU plot points to date is Agent Coulson's death in The Avengers and subsequent resurrection in the Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. TV show. Coulson is brought back to life with the help of ancient alien technology, and perhaps anticipating the ensuing s***storm of introducing Coulson back into the MCU, he has been kept away from any subsequent movies, such that fans with zero interest in the TV show can simply continue pretending he's dead...even though they know the truth in the back of their minds. This basically just underlines a problem with the MCU as a whole: death just doesn't mean very much, because there are several potential get-outs for any given character to be resurrected. Alien technology is one, and let's be honest, if Thor gets killed off, is anyone really going to believe he can't escape from Hel? They've written themselves into a corner in a sense by bringing Coulson back, because it means that fans are less likely to buy big into any emotional death scene in a future MCU movie, as they know it can just be retconned and handwaived with magic later on down the line.
