10 Massively Underrated 2000s Movie Performances

4. Jim Carrey - Lemony Snicket’s A Series Of Unfortunate Events

Granted, this one’s a bit of a curveball. After all, if you’re looking for an underrated slice of Lemony Snicket, many fans would direct you towards the Netflix show, which is often overlooked for the relative obscurity (and sheer bizarreness) of the source material.

Before the show, though, there was the 2004 movie adaptation, which has attracted its share of ire for playing a little fast and loose with the source material. However you may feel on that issue, though, it’s certainly a memorable take on the novels. Mostly because of Jim Carrey’s interpretation of Count Olaf.

In many ways, Olaf is a perfect character for Carrey to play. He’s a sly, deceptive, theatrical, larger than life villain, a master of disguise who will do anything to trick the Baudelaire children out of their family fortune. Like Stanley Ipkiss/The Mask or Aladdin’s Genie, he’s a bit of a blank slate to go wild with. Needless to say, that’s definitely in Carrey’s wheelhouse.

Not his best-known or most appreciated performance by a very long chalk, but fans of the actor will find him at his zany best here for sure.
