If you know anything about Joe Johnston, the director of the first Captain America movie, then this movie ending up here was merely a question of where it would end up. Joe Johnston is a master of the WWII epic in the modern day, able to translate this tried and true setting for American film, for a modern audience who has likely seen it all before.

The thing about Joe Johnston, and what makes him so interesting, is that he never takes inspiration from one film, but rather from an entire era of movie making. Captain America and his fellow soldiers in the films can easily be found in any number of romanticized world war 2 epics, and the climactic scene of Steve going down with the plane would be right at home in many wartime romances.

And like with how it portrays everyone's favorite patriot, this film wears those inspirations on its sleeve. It's blatant, yes, but it's the best kind of blatant.
