10 MCU Plot Holes That Aren't Actually Plot Holes

9. Rocket Understands Quill's Pollock Joke - Guardians Of The Galaxy

In Guardians Of The Galaxy, Peter Quill makes a joke about the fact that his ship would look like a Jackson Pollock painting if he shone a blacklight around the place.

In response, Rocket informs him that he has "issues", with the implication being that the raccoon understands the Pollock reference.

But how could he, given that he lives and operates in space? He also spent most of his earlier years being "torn apart and put back together", as he states in the movie. Many view this as a glaring flaw, and a loophole in Guardians' otherwise perfect characterisation, something that essentially breaks Rocket's backstory.

But if you take a look at this short interaction between the two characters and separate it from the bigger picture, it makes perfect sense.

Rocket never acknowledges that he doesn't know who Jackson Pollock is, and that's because he doesn't need this information to understand the joke. Rocket is well-traveled and very proficient with technology, so it's likely he knows what a blacklight is and how it operates - and that's enough to make the quip work for him.

Plus, Rocket is smart, and he's known Quill just long enough to be familiar with his crude sense of humour.
