10 MCU Storylines We’ll Never Get Closure On

4. What Happened In The Sorcerer Supreme’s Absence?

While we’re on the subject of the collateral damage caused by Thanos’ snap, let’s spare a thought for the consequences of Earth losing its Sorcerer Supreme.

Because Stephen Strange wasn’t just a superhero: he was our first and last line of defense against the kind of extra-dimensional pug-uglies that make Thanos look pretty. And it wasn’t like Strange was off for a bit, and Wong and the others could hold the fort until his sudden, dramatic return: he was one of billions, trillions across the galaxy and god knows how much further who lost their lives in the same minute.

Everything we know about the mantle of Sorcerer Supreme suggests it’s vital to the magical equilibrium of our world. In the event of one dying, another will be chosen to take their place. Five years later, when Strange reconstitutes after Banner performs the second Snap Heard Around The World, he’d be faced by someone else loitering in his library and wearing his favourite bunny slippers.

Even worse, wasn’t Dormammu’s vow to stay off our manor made to Strange? Wouldn’t the hellspawn Faltine consider the good doctor’s death a loophole to get out of his promise?

But none of that’s going to be addressed, is it? They’re not going to waste the first forty minutes of the Doctor Strange sequel having him fight for his old job back, and technically he wouldn’t have a leg to stand on anyway. No, we’ll never hear about it again.
