1. "The End" - Apocalypse Now
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1b26BD5KjH0 But still, no song quite suits its film as well as The Doors' epic, haunting tune The End, used at both the beginning and end of Francis Ford Coppola's Vietnam War masterpiece Apocalypse Now. In the opening section, it helps to immerse us in the existential Hell that is Saigon, juxtaposed with a gigantic explosion, followed by Captain Willard's (Martin Sheen) face. At the climax of the film, the tune re-appears as Willard commits to perform his ordained task, to terminate the crazed Colonel Kurtz (Marlon Brando) "with extreme prejudice". The tone of the film is eerie and foreboding throughout; this classic tune, acting as a bookend to everything that takes place, is the perfect means to cement this. No other film's use of music has stirred up such dread so well. What are your favourite uses of music in movies? Let us know in the comments below.
