10 Misleading Movie Trailers That Totally Fooled You
3. Kangaroo Jack - Everyone Loves A Talking Animal Movie, But This Isn't That Film
Kangaroo Jack was one of those forgettable, slapstick, early 2000s movies that came out to minimal fanfare, but that you probably had on your VHS shelf as a kid. Which is actually important to note, because even though the movie is rated U (for universal), the film wasn't supposed to be primarily for children. Kangaroo Jack was actually made as part of the buddy comedy craze that swept the cinema circuits in the 00s, like Dude Where's My Car?
But, as you've probably predicted at this point in the list, the trailer told a very different story. The trailer for Kangaroo Jack begins with a meet-cute scene of the two main characters as children; it's adorable and could very easily fit into a fun Nickelodeon movie. The movie then goes on to show the two guys, Charlie and Louis, as grown men about to embark on a trip to Oz to deliver an envelope of 50K to a place of unknown origin; only for the envelope to get stolen. Seems like the perfect formula for a buddy comedy right? Except for one detail: the money is stolen by a sunglasses clad, hoodie wearing, TALKING kangaroo.
The kangaroo is animated in that distinct way that every talking animal was back in the early 2000s, and the trailer shows it expressing itself and moving around with human-like animations. But the real crème de la crème comes at the end of the trailer, when kangaroo Jack starts talking to Charlie in a cartoony Australian accent, going as far as to sing Rapper's Delight to him.
This, combined with all the animation gives the impression of a goofy, talking animal movie. BUT, it isn't! The scene we see of kangaroo Jack talking, comes from Charlie suffering from a concussion; conveniently, that information isn't disclosed to us.
