10 More Actors Who Prepared For Roles In The Worst Possible Way
1. Bill Murray - Garfield
Bill Murray wasn't the first actor not to read a script before signing on for a film, nor will he be the last. On Garfield, though, Murray's decision to skip on perusing the movie's screenplay came back to majorly bite him on the ass.
Upon being sent the script for Garfield, the legendary Bill saw the name 'Joel Cohen' on the front cover and didn't hesitate in joining the picture as the voice of its titular lasagne-eating feline.
As he once said on The Today Show (as per CinemaBlend), Murray had been toying with the idea of doing an animated movie when that Garfield screenplay came across his desk.
The loveable Garfield? On the big screen? As written by one half of the brilliant team behind the likes of The Big Lebowski, No Country for Old Men, Fargo, O Brother, Where Art Thou? and so many more?
The problem for Bill Murray is that he mistook the name Joel Cohen for that of Joel Coen. So instead of being penned by one of the iconic Coen brothers, Garfield was written by the fella who'd penned Monster Mash: The Movie and Cheaper by the Dozen.
Even more amusing, Bill didn't realise until he joined the movie midway through production to lay down his vocals. There, he found himself tweaking scene after scene after realising the script just wasn't all that funny - and only then did the penny drop.
