10 More Awesome Movies That Didn't Deserve To Bomb
5. Blade Runner 2049
There's a very strong argument to be made that Denis Villeneuve's Blade Runner 2049 is one of the greatest sci-fi films of all time, one of the most celebrated sequels ever made, and that it quite arguably did the seemingly impossible - it outdid Ridley Scott's seminal 1982 original.
With its mesmerising aesthetics, rich themes, and expectation-defying story, Blade Runner 2049 was basically a best case scenario for a 35-years-later sequel to one of the most iconic genre films of all time.
But alas, nobody turned up to see it.
On a budget of $185 million, the sequel grossed just $276.6 million, making it a sizable flop for Warner Bros.
Granted, spending so much money on a belated sequel to a cult classic sci-fi film was always a massive risk, and though the studio likely expected that Ryan Gosling might propel the film to box office dynamite, he's certainly not a consistent commercial draw.
It didn't help at all that the marketing was incredibly vague about the story and the precise nature of Harrison Ford's role, and its slow-moving 163-minute runtime likely didn't win it much favour with casual sci-fi fans.
It's a sad outcome for debatably one of the best films of the last decade, but for many fans of the original, they're simply glad that it exists, even if nobody's going to splash mad money on another Blade Runner anytime soon.
