10 More Awesome Movies That Didn't Deserve To Bomb
6. Doctor Sleep
Given that The Shining is one of the most popular horror movies of all time, and horror sequels usually perform well at the box office, Doctor Sleep seemed set to be a modest hit.
With acclaimed filmmaker Mike Flanagan leading the charge, Ewan McGregor as his lead, and the budget sitting at a sensible(ish) $55 million, it should've been an easy success.
Couple this with strong reviews and a consensus from fans that Flanagan delivered a worthy Shining follow-up against the odds, and it was disheartening to see Doctor Sleep gross just $72.4 million worldwide.
Ultimately, it was outgrossed by a bevy of inferior horror flicks that year, including the Pet Sematary remake, The Curse of La Llorona, Escape Room, Annabelle Comes Home, and It Chapter Two.
You can certainly argue that younger audiences are less familiar with The Shining and Doctor Sleep's marketing unsuccessfully tried to appeal to Shining fans, Stephen King die-hards, and general horror fans all at once.
Then there's the fact that it released a week after Halloween and rocked a potentially off-putting 152-minute runtime, not to ignore its R-rating or McGregor's rather mixed track record at the box office.
Given Flanagan's outstanding work as writer-director here, though, this one deserved to do so, so much better.
