10 MORE Characters That Were Cut From MCU Movies

9. Nightmare - Doctor Strange

Nightmare Marvel
Marvel Comics

The Character

The evil ruler of the Dream Dimension, with a penchant for harnessing the "psychic energies" of dreamers and even tormenting them in their dreams.

He's best known for fighting Doctor Strange and Ghost Rider throughout his comic book tenure, and has always been a bit of a cult fave with comic fans.

What Happened?

Doctor Strange director Scott Derrickson originally planned to make Nightmare the film's primary antagonist, yet was ultimately talked out of it by, surprise, Kevin Feige.

Derrickson said, "The trouble with starting with Nightmare is getting across the idea of the Dream Dimension as another dimension. The movie was challenging enough. It's already an exposition-heavy movie... Dormammu made the most sense. And he is the most present villain in the comics."

You can certainly see where Feige is coming from here: the film already had heady enough concepts to sell the audience on, so this may have simply been too much.

Early last year, writer Robert C. Cargill tacitly confirmed that Nightmare will appear in the upcoming sequel, though it of course remains to be seen whether or not the plan will actually stick this time.
