S. Craig Zahler's dark Western revolves around Franklin Hunt, an aged sheriff who's vowed to rescue a woman from cave-dwelling cannibals.

Now, nobody would contest Bone Tomahawk is a challenging watch, even for horror veterans.

That's why it's interesting to learn that the violence isn't extreme until the last 30 minutes. For the longest time, the gore is surprisingly tame, even when it shouldn't be. After Hunt's friend hurts his leg, his companions have no choice but to perform surgery on it. Despite the R-rating, the hacking and slashing is left off-screen. As such, you'll assume Bone Tomahawk won't have any gratuitous bloodshed.

Little do unsuspecting viewers realise the film is saving all the hellish visuals for the finale. After Hunt makes his way to the cannibal's hideout, he's quickly disposed of and tossed into a cell. With no way out, the sheriff is forced to watch his friends being eaten alive. And that's not the worst part.

With Hunt behind bars, he's unable to help his friend having the top of his head ripped off and being force-fed his own scalp. And that's not the worst part... again.

With no warning, the savages flip Hunt's de-scalped friend upside-down and repeatedly hack at his genitalia before splitting him in half like a wish-bone. There's no doubt Bone Tomahawk is astounding, but this sequence alone will scare many moviegoers off from seeing it again.
