10 More Horror Movie Reveals So Bad You Almost Walked Out
5. Ghosts Of War
Ghosts of War is one of those movies that pisses people off because its enthralling mystery is let down by the most clichéd twist possible.
This war-driven horror centres around five American soldiers assigned to guard a chateau during World War II, only to discover the building is haunted. When the paranormal force starts leaving cryptic messages for the group, they can't tell what's real and what isn't. As they try to leave, the events that led to the mission begin to occur again, indicating that the squad is trapped in a time loop.
While viewers are wrapping their heads around this development, it's abruptly explained that all the main characters are in the modern world, taking part in a simulation to study post-traumatic stress. Although this reveal is meant to be shocking, it cheapens everything that came before, since all the pulse-racing action and heart-wrenching deaths were merely 1s and 0s in a VR program.
To play devil's advocate, this twist could work if it were foreshadowed in some way. Instead, the movie heavily leans into the spooky elements early on, so the sudden sci-fi transition is tonally jarring.
