It's a shame the follow-ups to The Texas Chain Saw Massacre never lived up to the original. The later instalments often tried to spice things up by expanding the lore, usually resulting in ridiculous retcons or nonsensical plot points.

Which brings us to Texas Chainsaw 3D. The mediocre slasher opens with a woman called Heather heading to Texas to claim her inheritance, unaware she's being pursued by Leatherface. Texas Chainsaw 3D feels like a run-of-the-mill sequel for the most part, but mixes things up at the halfway point by revealing that Leatherface is Heather's cousin.

When Heather realises Leatherface's dwindling mental state drove him to murder, she joins forces with the blade-wielding cannibal and agrees to care for him.

In one way, you have to commend the filmmakers for going against the grain, but one of the reasons why Leatherface is so terrifying is the fact that he's completely closed off from the rest of the world, almost like he's an alien. The instant this bombshell drops and Leatherface starts protecting his cuz, he stops being a horror icon.

Also, having the protagonist revealed as a relative to the villain has been done many times before in slashers like Halloween and A Nightmare on Elm Street, so this moment leaves zero impact.
