10 More Horror Movie Sequels That Were Just Too Cruel
1. Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
2022's Texas Chainsaw Massacre attempted to give the iconic horror franchise the in vogue legacy sequel treatment, serving as a direct follow-up to Tobe Hooper's 1974 original.
And while the franchise has always skirted on the fringes of taste, the original film was actually relatively restrained with its approach to violence, whereas the most recent sequel is so sadistic as to leave even card-carrying gore-hounds feeling more depressed than entertained.
Where to even begin with this one? Conceptually, the film seems to have a major bone to pick with Gen Z and clearly relishes lingering on the deaths of its youthful central characters.
Who can forget the infamous sequence where Leatherface (Mark Burnham) slaughters a bus full of influencers who attempt to "cancel" him?
Beyond that, our protagonist Lila (Elsie Fisher) is a school shooting survivor who ends up seriously re-traumatised at film's end when her sister Melody (Sarah Yarkin) is suddenly decapitated by Leatherface, who triumphantly dances and taunts her as she drives away.
And this is all without even getting to the return of the series' original protagonist, Sally Hardesty (Olwen Fouéré).
Though initially presented as a battle-hardened badass who is more than prepared to take on Leatherface, her decades-long quest to resolve her own trauma backfires spectacularly when he runs her through with his trusty chainsaw.
Unsurprisingly the film was wildly divisive with both critics and fans alike, many feeling that it was just too nihilistic for its own good.
