10 More Horror Movie Sequels That Were Just Too Cruel
9. Final Destination 3
The second Final Destination film seemingly opened a pathway for death-marked characters to survive, after Kimberly (A.J. Cook) realises that she can usurp Death's plan by allowing herself to drown and then being revived.
This leaves Kimberly and Burke (Michael Landes) safe - a fact confirmed by the recent Final Destination: Bloodlines - though things sadly don't work out quite so fortuitously for the third film's protagonist, Wendy (Mary Elizabeth Winstead).
Though Final Destination 3 ends with Wendy having seemingly sidestepped Death's plan, the final scene shows her and her pals onboard a derailed train that kills everyone onboard. At this moment we pull out to see that, in a novel twist, Wendy has experienced a second premonition.
And while this typically gives the character in question a few precious seconds to avert their fate, Wendy isn't so lucky, the ending implying that she and her friends are killed in the train crash.
Even for the standards of Final Destination that's pretty harsh, especially as Wendy is shown to be one of the smarter and more cautious characters in the series.
Couple this with Final Destination 3 featuring arguably the single most sadistically prolonged death in the series with the tanning bed barbecue, and this is a movie that takes no prisoners for better or worse.
While Final Destination 2 suggested the possibility of future protagonists outwitting death, Final Destination 3 solidified the "everyone dies" trope that's sustained the series ever since.
