10 More Horror Movie Sequels That Were Just Too Cruel
5. Unfriended: Dark Web
The first Unfriended didn't feel like an especially cruel horror film given that almost every single major character was revealed to be a thoroughly unsavoury person, enough to make you root for the vengeful entity picking them off one by one all while they begin turning on one another.
Sequel Unfriended: Dark Web, however, offers up a far more likeable ensemble of characters, enough that the relentlessly brutal manner in which they're dispatched is decidedly tougher to watch.
Basically, it's a lot less fun to watch the victims suffer and die in Dark Web, and as a result it ends up feeling like a far more nihilistic, even mean-spirited piece of work.
Is it effective? To a point absolutely, even if after the more schlocky, guilt-free fun of the first film it shifts into a very different, less purely entertaining gear.
Somewhat unsurprisingly, this meaner sequel grossed barely a quarter of what its predecessor did at the box office, effectively killing the franchise in the process.
