9. Scream 4
Though the opening to Scream 4 is somewhat divisive among the fandom, it does nevertheless follow in the series' tradition of delivering a wildly subversive pre-title sequence.
The sequel opens with two young women (Lucy Hale and Shenae Grimes) being slaughtered by Ghostface in extremely typical fashion for the franchise, before we learn we're actually watching the opening scene from film-within-a-film Stab 6, as is being watched by two other women (Anna Paquin and Kristen Bell).
As the pair discuss the dire state of modern horror, however, Bell's character stabs Paquin's and we pull back again to reveal that this is a film-within-a-film-within-a-film - in fact, it's Stab 7.
Stab 7 is being watched by Jenny (Britt Robertson) and Marnie (Aimee Teegarden), Scream 4's first "real" victims, who are then promptly offed by Ghostface without any further fake-outs.
Though some fans felt that this opening was trying a little too hard to be meta and clever, on an initial viewing it certainly caught everyone by surprise.
